The present Covid-19 pandemic is taking its toll on Fiji. Western Viti Levu depends mainly on tourism which, now has come to a standstill. The pandemic has rendered jobless thousands of people such as chefs, housekeepers, cleaners, waiters, front-office staff, taxi drivers, massage parlors, restaurants, curio sellers, etc.<\/p>\n
Ramakrishna Mission has been distributing \u201cGrocery Hampers\u201d, clothes, crutches, wheelchairs, sewing machines etc. \u00a0to families which have been economically devastated. Before the present lockdown we were providing lunch to 170 students every day. There is a continuous cry for food and help.<\/p>\n
To promote sustained food security, we would like to distribute seeds to the people to encourage them to cultivate vegetables in their backyard gardens and farms. We had done such projects during the earlier cyclones and floods. Winston was a major project.<\/p>\n
A $50 pack containing varieties of vegetable seeds can empower people to grow their own vegetables for many months. It promotes food and nutrition security. The public and farmers have been requesting for seeds which are out of stock here now.<\/p>\n
We have our committed well-wisher volunteers\u00a0\u00a0 in Australia and New-Zealand who sincerely collect useful items like sewing machines, wheelchairs, hospital beds and equipment, good clothes, etc.\u00a0 They pack the items, label them, load them onto containers and ship them over to Fiji.\u00a0 Expenses like sea-freight, customs clearance, logistics, etc. too have to be taken care of.<\/p>\n
